About Us

Overview

West Wight Sports and Community Centre is a registered charity (No. 273334) based in Freshwater on the Isle of Wight, dedicated to supporting the physical, mental and social well‑being of our community.

At the heart of everything we do is a simple aim: to provide accessible facilities, activities and support that bring people together, improve lives and strengthen the West Wight  and wider Isle of Wight community.

From swimming and fitness to community support and specialist programmes, we are proud to be a place where people of all ages and abilities can feel welcome, supported and connected.

A Community Hub

West Wight is much more than a leisure centre—it is a community hub offering a diverse range of facilities and services, including:

  • Swimming pools and swimming lessons
  • Sports hall and gym facilities
    Exercise classes and well‑being programmes
  • Café, meeting rooms and community spaces
  • Community support services and outreach
  • On‑site partners including health and therapy providers

We work with individuals, families, local groups and partner organisations to support not just physical activity, but connection, confidence and well‑being across the Isle of Wight.

Our Story

The story of West Wight Sports and Community Centre is one of community spirit, determination and collaboration.
Originally built through the efforts of local people and the swimming club, the Centre has grown over time—from a single pool into a multi‑purpose community facility. Over the years, it has evolved to include:

  • Expanded sports and fitness facilities
  • The development of the Community Centre and youth provision
  • The addition of family support services and partner organisations
  • A growing programme of community‑focused activities and initiatives

Today, West Wight continues to adapt and respond to the needs of the community, while staying true to its roots as a community‑led organisation.

Supporting Health and Well‑Being

Our programmes are designed to support people at every stage of life.

Alongside traditional sports and fitness activities, we offer more targeted support through initiatives such as:

  • Specialist programmes, including the Parkinson’s Disease course
  • Gentle and inclusive sessions for those with additional needs
  • Community support services, including the Community Connector
  • Social sessions such as Our Place and themed community groups

These services help us reach those who may benefit most, ensuring we remain a truly inclusive Centre.

The Importance of Swimming

Swimming is at the core of our identity and remains one of the most important services we provide.
Living on an island, learning to swim is a vital life skill. Through our swimming lessons and water‑based programmes, we help:

  • Build confidence and water safety awareness
  • Promote drowning prevention
  • Support lifelong participation in swimming and activity
  • Encourage health and well‑being through movement

We are proud to have taught generations of local people to swim—a legacy that continues today.

Events, Activities and Community Life

West Wight is home to a wide range of events and activities that bring the community together.

From large‑scale events such as the Festival of Running, Solent Swim and Chilly Hilly Challenge, to everyday classes, clubs and social sessions, there are opportunities for everyone to get involved.

We also work closely with local groups, organisations and volunteers to deliver activities that reflect the needs and interests of the community.

Strong Community Connections

Partnership is central to everything we do.
We work closely with:

  • Local town and parish councils
  • Community groups and organisations
  • Health and well‑being providers
  • Schools, clubs and volunteers

Together, these relationships enable us to deliver services that go beyond a traditional sports centre, supporting connection, resilience and community life across West Wight.

Looking Ahead

As a charity, our focus is on sustainability, accessibility and continued growth.
We are committed to:

  • Keeping our facilities open and inclusive
  • Expanding opportunities for community involvement
  • Developing programmes that respond to local need
  • Strengthening partnerships across the Isle of Wight

With the ongoing support of our community, partners and supporters, we look forward to continuing this journey for many years to come.

Our Commitment

West Wight Sports and Community Centre exists because of the people it serves—and it continues to thrive because of the people who support it.

Together, we are building a healthier, more connected and more resilient West Wight community.
