It is with great sadness we heard that Ron Smith, a key figure in the establishment of West Wight Swimming Pool, passed away on Boxing Day, aged 95. The West Wight community is indebted to Ron and his tireless fight for the West Wight.
He had lived in a care home in Bembridge since 2015.
Clare Griffin said: “This community would not be what it is without Ron’s enormous and tireless contribution over many years and in so many facets of community life.
Ron was the first Chairman of West Wight Swimming Pool Trust, set up in 1976 after a group of Islanders campaigned and raised money to build the first indoor swimming pool on the Isle of Wight.
“Ron led the team of volunteers in the building of the pool and was heavily involved for many years until his retirement as a Trustee around 30 years later, when the swimming pool had developed to become West Wight Sports & Community Centre.
“Ron was tireless in his battles for funding for the West Wight pool and for the fair distribution of IWC funds and resources to the West Wight.
A memorial celebration has been arranged for 3.30pm on Tuesday January 21 at the Holmwood Hotel, Egypt Point, Cowes.
