Barre has evolved from classical ballet, thanks largely to the amazing Lotte Berk, a German dancer who combined her dance conditioning routines with rehabilitative therapy when she injured her back, and went on to open her first studio in London back in 1959. Throw in a bit of Pilates, a few high intensity cardio drills, some epic, upbeat playlists, and fifty years later you have yourself one heck of a fitness trend.
The small, super-controlled movements that take place in barre classes are kind on your joints, tendons, ligaments and spine, while the Pilates inspired alignment that is taught in every class will nurture your core strength and posture, all part and parcel of giving you that sensation of ‘lengthening’ your entire body. Think sleek, ballerina vibes…tempting, right?!
The tiny range of motion used for every movement, combined with the high reps, intentional squeezes and pulses (otherwise known as isometric moves) are designed to work muscles until you can do no more. It might not LOOK like hard work if you watch a barre class in action, but you will be left shaking by the end of class, quite literally – and this is a GOOD sign, as it shows you are working to fatigue, and forcing the muscle to ‘tone’.
