40 years ago the West Wight community built its own swimming pool. In 2017, we are asking the community to get behind us again, as we launch the exciting next chapter in our story.

From 1 January to 26 February we are running a Crowdfunder campaign, to raise £20,000 towards the cost of a new indoor climbing wall. We’re 5 weeks into the campaign and we have raised £2,195, so please keep those pledges coming!

Crowdfunder is an online website where people can pledge money to community projects and in return they receive a reward.

Everyone who supports the project will receive the following:

  • Have their name on our ‘Wall of supporters’ in our cafe
  • Receive an invitation to the grand opening of the climbing wall
  • 2 swimming vouchers

Plus a range of other rewards depending on the level of the pledge, including:

  • Vouchers for climbing sessions
  • Gold memberships to the Sports Centre
  • Private climbing session for up to 12 people
  • Swim and climbing vouchers to give to friends and family

“Our new climbing wall is going to be a fantastic new addition to the Centre and one which can be enjoyed by the whole community. We chose Crowdfunder to raise the money, as it’s a perfect fit. It enables the community to become part of the project through the rewards we can give them as a thank you for supporting us” explains Centre Manager Clare Griffin.

“So far we have raised £13,000 through the 3 Peaks Challenge which saw a group of staff, centre users, families and friends attempt to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 24 hours last summer” says Clare. “The Crowdfunder campaign runs for just 8 weeks, so we need everyone to spread the word and tell all their friends and family about it. And of course, make a pledge!”

“It’s 40 years ago this April since work started on the first swimming pool. It only happened because the community came together. We hope we can recapture that community spirit in 2017 with our climbing wall project.”
